Who we are
The
Private Security Gender and Human Rights Platform (PRISEP) is a registered
non-political and non-governmental organization dedicated to advancing gender
equality and human rights within the private security sector in Tanzania. Our
platform comprises founding members with diverse expertise, including
experienced lawyers, human rights advocates, gender specialists, and
development experts. We work collaboratively with stakeholders, including
Private Security Companies (PSCs), private security unions and associations,
civil society organizations focused on human rights and gender, academia,
media, research institutions, and government departments.
Our
overarching mission is to empower and establish effective systems for assessing
PSCs' compliance with national, regional, and international legal frameworks,
including codes of conduct. Additionally, we are committed to monitoring and
addressing non-compliance issues, enhancing the capacity of PSCs regarding
gender and human rights laws and regulations, and advocating for the adoption
of best practices in security codes of conduct at local, national, regional,
and international levels, all while promoting human rights and gender equity
through evidence-based research.
PRISEP's
core activities revolve around research and documentation, advocacy, training,
capacity building, awareness-raising, partnerships, and networking. We employ
gender and human rights-based approaches and engage with communities to create
an environment where Private Security Companies are accessible, accountable,
and transparent in their operations.
Our
ultimate goal is to foster a private security sector in Tanzania that not only
adheres to legal and ethical standards but also actively contributes to the
promotion of gender equality and human rights. Through collaborative efforts
and evidence-driven initiatives, PRISEP strives to make a lasting impact on the
private security landscape in Tanzania.
